 Introduction

For this introduction to the southern coastal areas of Cambodia, we head for Koh Kong after arrival in Phnom Penh. We spend two nights aboard our luxury floating lodge where kayaks are available for the more adventurous, before continuing onto the country is prime beach location of Sihanoukville for some relaxation downtime and sun worship. The re-emerging resort of Kep beckons and we enjoy fresh seafood on an island trip and the unique cave pagodas in the limestone karsts that dot the area. Our final leg of the journey crosses the border into Ha Tien in Vietnam and our final leg of the itinerary, the beautiful island paradise that is Phu Quoc.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Phnom Penh. Travel to Koh Kong {B}


On arrival we head south on National Highway 4 and pause to pay our respects to Yeay Peau, a protective spirit who looks after travellers on the road at Pich Nil Pass, We swing west on new National Highway 48 towards Koh Kong, passing through some beautiful stretches of Cambodian countryside. We stop for a local lunch along the way before arriving at Tatai, where we transfer by boat to our overnight floating lodge. Overnight in Koh Kong

Day 2: Kayaking and Relaxation {B}


We spend the day relaxing at the floating lodge. Kayaks are available and a boat trip to Tatai waterfall is included in the program. Overnight in Koh Kong

Day 3: Koh Kong to Sihanoukville {B}


We leave Koh Kong province after breakfast and continue south to the popular resort of Sihanoukville, home to Cambodia’s finest beaches. We check into our hotel and leave the rest of the day free to enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm waters. Overnight in Sihanoukville

Day 4: Free time in Sihanoukville {B}

Day 5: Sihanoukville to Kep {B}

We leave Sihanoukville and travel north on National Highway 4. We pass through the small town of Veal Renh and then turn east towards Kampot. This pretty road passes under the shadow of Bokor Mountain and hugs the coastline for much of its length. We may stop in Kampot for refreshments and a stroll along the riverfront before continuing to the old French beach resort of Kep. Overnight in Kep

Day 6: Morning to Rabbit Island. Afternoon Kep Cave Pagodas {B}

This morning, we travel to the boat pier to board a local boat for the journey to Koh Tonsay or Rabbit Island. We journey across calm waters to this beautiful palm-fringed island, home to a small community of fisherfolk and farmers. We leave some time free to enjoy the white-sand beaches that ring the island. Then, we travel back to Kep by boat. In the afternoon, we leave Kep and travel to the little town of Kompong Trach. For a long time this place was forgotten, as the civil war kept it off the map, but the new border crossing with Vietnam has seen a bit of a boom. We stop to visit the interesting cave temple of Wat Kirisan, built into the base of Phnom Sor. We travel through a small cave to a hidden chamber open to the elements, the sheer walls dripping with foliage. There are several hidden shrines here, as well as the Cave of a Thousand Ricefields, where locals claim the limestone looks like terraces. We then journey to Phnom Chhnork, a large cave that contains a 7th century brick temple in remarkable condition. This hidden temple is a very sacred place for local Khmers. Later we return to Kep, our base of the night. Overnight in Kep

Day 7: Kep to Ha Tien and Phu Quoc {B}

We leave Kep and head south towards the Vietnamese border. We leave Cambodia and cross into Vietnam. We then travel to Ha Tien and transfer to the island of Phu Quoc
